What Is Wicca?
Wicca is a modern Pagan faith that worships nature, acknowledges both divine masculine and feminine energies, and reveres a spiritual path of harmony, respect, and magick. Wicca became popular en masse in the mid-20th century, but its roots go a very, very long way back and are founded upon ancient pagan philosophies, myths, and occult practices.
Wiccans worship a Goddess and a God, whom they consider two equal forces that created and sustain the universe. And unlike some religions whose sacred days are focused on what occurred in the past, Wiccan sacred days are related to nature—the cycles of the moon, the cycles of the seasons, and the dance of life itself.
One of the biggest myths? That Wicca is all about spells. Spellwork is part of it, yes, but Wicca is, first and foremost, a nature-based, energy-focused belief system and one of personal responsibility.
Wicca vs. Witchcraft: What's the Difference?
Whereas Wicca is a religion, witchcraft is a practice. Put it this way: Not all witches are Wiccans, and not all Wiccans are witches. I just refer to myself as a witch to keep it simple.
Witchcraft is the art of accessing natural forces to bring about change. It's spellwork, herbal and crystal magic, and listening to the beat of the earth to bring your desires into being. Some work Wicca, and some are solitary and work from other traditions.
So, if you desire the magickal but are not sure about the religious, that is fine. Witchcraft is adaptable, and you have control over how it becomes integrated into your life.
What Is Magick?
First, let's clarify: Magick (with a 'k') and magic (no disappearing rabbits out of thin air here) are not the same. Magick is about intention, energy, and change. It's the art of focusing your will, making use of natural correspondences (candles, herbs, and crystals, for example), and working in sympathy with cosmic energies to bring about change.
Spells, rituals, and manifestations? They’re all forms of magick. Whether you’re lighting a candle for protection or setting an intention under a full moon, you’re practicing a form of magick—yes, even if you’re just dabbling.
My First Encounter with Witchcraft
For as long as I can remember, I was interested in witchery. I've been reading since I was three years old and my mom and I (my mom is a very religious Christian) were in a used bookstore. My toddler self pulled a book about witchcraft off of the shelves that was from the 1800s. She wouldn't let me get it and I am still mad to this day. As I got older and had access to the library, I was able to explore what is witchcraft? How does it work? Does it really exist?
Lesson number one: witches look just like everyone else. Ditch the Hollywood clichés—most witches are unremarkable. They're your co-workers, your neighbors, your baristas. Sure, some of them go all out with the flowing robes and melodrama (respect), but otherwise, witches are ordinary people.
Debunking the Myths: Witches Aren't Evil
Unfortunately, not everyone is open-minded when it comes to witchcraft. Even today, witches are unfairly lumped in with Satanists, heathens, or just "bad people." This is such a relic of an outdated misconception it hurts.
On the record: Wicca is not about Satan. Wiccans don't even believe in the devil—that's Christian, not witchy.
Wiccans use the Wiccan Rede: An it harm none, do what ye will. In other words, do your thing, but don't hurt anyone. Magick isn't manipulation— Magick is empowering, healing, and following along with the universe.
The Basics of Spellcasting
Spells are a prayer with punch. They involve rituals, incantations, symbols, and nature to focus energy on some specific aim. But—and this is important—all spellwork has to be within ethical guidelines. In Wicca, this means:
All spells are individualized, but most include a combination of:
Wiccan Holidays & Celebrations
The Wiccan Wheel of the Year is an eight-festival (Sabbats) cycle celebrating the changing seasons:
All of these holidays tie Wiccans to nature's cycles and are celebrated with rituals, feasts, and magickal workings.
