A Witchy Guide to Aromatherapy for Insomnia
Insomnia is a common affliction that can wreak havoc on your health and well-being. When you can't catch a good night's sleep, If you are anything like me, you're more likely to experience fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. You could also be at an increased risk for developing chronic health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Fortunately, there are several natural ways to treat insomnia, and one of the most effective is aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is using essential oils to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
When used correctly, aromatherapy can help to calm the mind, relax the body, and promote deep sleep. Here are a few tips for using aromatherapy to cure insomnia:
- Choose the right essential oils. The best essential oils for insomnia are those that have calming and sedative properties. Some popular choices include lavender, chamomile, vetiver, and sandalwood. I use a lavender pillow spray nightly and it is absolutely heavenly.
- Use a diffuser. A diffuser is a device that disperses essential oils into the air. This is a great way to create a relaxing and sleep-promoting atmosphere in your bedroom.
- Add essential oils to your bath. Soaking in a warm bath with essential oils is a great way to relax and unwind before bed. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oils to the bathwater and enjoy! To make this even easier, you can get bath salts or bath bombs with essential oils in them. I regularly use Flewd Stresscare for bath salts and Cosset bath bombs for luxurious relaxation before bedtime.
- Massage essential oils into your body. Massaging essential oils into your body is a great way to promote relaxation and sleep. Mix a few drops of essential oil with a carrier oil, such as jojoba oil or almond oil, and massage it into your feet, temples, and chest.
Here are a few specific recipes for aromatherapy blends that can help to cure insomnia that I have personally used:
- Lavender and chamomile: Mix equal parts lavender and chamomile essential oils in a diffuser or add them to your bathwater. This blend is very calming and relaxing, and it can help to promote deep sleep.
- Sandalwood and vetiver: Mix equal parts sandalwood and vetiver essential oils in a diffuser or add them to your bathwater. This blend is grounding and centering, plus it can help to reduce anxiety and stress.
- Ylang-ylang and neroli: Mix equal parts ylang-ylang and neroli essential oils in a diffuser or add them to your bathwater. This blend is calming and soothing, and it can help to reduce stress and promote relaxation.
Witchy Tips for Using Aromatherapy:
- Set an intention. Before you use aromatherapy, take a moment to set an intention for your practice. What do you want to achieve with aromatherapy? Are you looking to relax, heal, or connect with your higher self?
- Use high-quality essential oils. Not all essential oils are created equal. When choosing essential oils, look for those that are pure, unadulterated, and therapeutic-grade.
- Be mindful. When you inhale an essential oil, take a few deep, mindful breaths. Allow the scent to fill your lungs and circulate throughout your body. Feel the energy of the oil shifting your consciousness.

- Use the same essential oils before a daily journaling session.
